A few years ago Jon Hess (of NeoModus) created a system to exchange files via FTP popular, known as Direct Connect and despite what was practical in his day, and is not currently used. Direct Connect operation was based on a series of hubs, which requires each user to a set of rules, because they kept a certain equality between the users and that all should share at least to download files from these servers (hubs).
The most popular client that this protocol is, undoubtedly, DC++ 0.791 because, unlike others, allowing connection with several hubs, did not include adware and its interface was much lighter than the competition.
