MAME 0.144 stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, or whatever it is, an emulator of several types of slot machines that you can enjoy on your computer over 6000 games of all time. The current version of MAME 0.144 to navigate through the contents of the folder ROMs (the games) through a simple text-mode interface, so it is no longer necessary to use the command line to run a game. If you prefer a version of MAME 0.144 with a full graphical interface, you should use MAME32.
