x264 Video Codec r1442 - codec enables encoding H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video. Obtain high quality output while maintaining small file sizes. This codec is intended for use in programs such as VirtualDub.

x264 Video Codec r1442 is a library free to encode video chains H.264/MPEG-4 AVC. The code is written from scratch by Loren Merritt, Dark Shikari, Laurent Aimar, Eric Petit, Min Chen, Justin Clay, Mans Rullgard, Radek Czyz, Alex Izvorski, Alex Wright, and Christian Heine. He was released under public license GPL, but this license may be incompatible with the licensing of MPEG-LA patents in jurisdictions that recognize software patents.

x264 Video Codec r1442 is available as a type of Video for Windows and as a command line interface. The latter always up to date, while version "Video For Windows" has been discontinued from the r532, and requires hacks to handle B frames (a limitation of AVI format forces the use of packed bitstream). There have been many graphical interfaces for command-line version, including MeGUI, autoAb and GUI.NET (1.1) based on x264CLI.

x264 has formed a huge community of users, especially in Doom9, where discussions take place to make improvements to development.
